Save Venice and The Gritti Palace Announce a Collaboration to Restore Art & Architecture in Venice’s Palazzo Ducale
- 27 February 2023
Venice, Italy (February 27, 2023) – Save Venice, the American non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of art and architecture in Venice, is proud to announce a new conservation campaign for the Room of the Four Doors in Palazzo Ducale in Venice. The Gritti Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Venice, will provide lead corporate support for the campaign, financing the conservation of the Door to the Senate, and contributing towards the conservation of the ceiling. Save Venice, in collaboration with the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, has committed to fund the conservation of the room’s elaborate decorative ceiling complete with frescoes by Jacopo Tintoretto and the monumental four doors from which the room takes its name, with treatment slated to begin in Spring 2023.
During the last 50 years, Save Venice has become the foremost funder from North America of Venice’s artistic patrimony, sponsoring the conservation treatment of nearly 2,000 works of art and architecture across the city and lagoon. Over the past decade alone the organization has funded restoration projects and educational initiatives in Venice totaling over $18 million. Projects range in scale from entire churches (Santa Maria dei Miracoli) to individual paintings (Titian’s Assunta in the Basilica dei Frari) and frescos (Paolo Veronese’s decorative cycle in San Sebastiano), sculptures, manuscripts and neighborhood wellheads. The partnership with The Gritti Palace aims to further support the work of the organization and bring increased international attention to the unique challenges facing the historic city.
Save Venice Chairman, Frederick Ilchman said, “Venice's Palazzo Ducale was for centuries the headquarters of a famously stable system of government. Today it remains one of the grandest buildings from medieval Europe, a masterpiece of architecture, painting, and sculpture. Save Venice is grateful that The Gritti Palace will serve as the lead corporate sponsor to restore one of the most magnificent spaces within the Palazzo Ducale: the Room of the Four Doors.”
Paolo Lorenzoni, General Manager of The Gritti Palace, a Luxury Collection, Venice, said, “Throughout its centuries-old heritage, The Gritti Palace has enjoyed a strong affinity with the art world, both as a place in Venice where artists and the cultural élite would gather, but also for its patronage of Venetian culture and the city's artistic patrimony. Through our collaboration with Save Venice, The Gritti Palace is proud to be able to renew its role as a Patron of Venice by contributing to the conservation of the extraordinary Room of the Four Doors in the Palazzo Ducale, and by bringing the attention of our hotel guests to the exceptional restoration projects led by Save Venice to preserve our unique city for future generations.”
SAVE VENICE recently commemorated its 50th Anniversary in 2022 with 40+ art restorations in Venice underway simultaneously. The Gritti Palace partnership supports Save Venice’s mission to conserve and protect at-risk art and architecture in Venice. The organization also celebrates the successful conclusion of major conservation projects including the centerpiece 50th Anniversary-year restorations of 2,442 square feet of Byzantine apse mosaics in the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta on the island of Torcello in 2022; the Scuola Italiana (Italian Synagogue) in the Jewish Ghetto of Venice in 2023; the apse mosaics of the Basilica of Santa Maria and San Donato now underway through summer 2023 on Murano; and exciting new initiatives including the Women Artists of Venice (WAV) to recover the history of women artists and artisans who were born in or active in Venice in the early modern period through an ambitious program of conservations and new research.
Guests of The Gritti Palace have the rare opportunity of viewing a selection of the conservation projects currently underway through tailor-made behind-the-scenes visits of the restoration sites led by Save Venice experts, as well as visiting recently completed restoration projects by Save Venice around the city. Save Venice is the leading American 501©3 non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the artistic heritage of Venice, Italy. Save Venice was founded in the wake of the devastating floods of 1966 – the worst in its history – and formally incorporated in 1971. Since then, Save Venice has funded the conservation of nearly 2,000 individual artworks. In 2015, Save Venice established the Rosand Library & Study Center in Venice, creating a nexus for the research of Venetian art, history, and conservation. With offices in New York and Venice, Save Venice also provides grants for fellowships, exhibitions, and publications. Following the floods of November and December 2019, Save Venice created the “Immediate Response Fund” to ensure a sustained reserve for disaster relief and preventive conservation to protect Venice’s most vulnerable sites going forward. Save Venice recently launched “Women Artists of Venice,” a program to identify, restore, and celebrate the accomplishments of pre-modern women artists and artisans, including Rosalba Carriera (1673-1757) and Giulia Lama (1681-1747). savevenice.org
